APPEAL TO
The
President of the Italian Republic
Giorgio
Napolitano
The
President of the Italian Encyclopedia Institute
Giuliano
Amato
Save the
Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani
The “Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani” is known
worldwide as a precious and essential research tool.
The work plan, as it has been conceived by the
Istituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana and implemented since 1960,
envisages the publication of about 105 volumes for a total of 40,000
entries, intending to cover the biographies of all Italians who,
since the 5th century A.D. , have given a significant
contribution to the political, literary and artistic life of the
country. A great many scholars, both Italian and international, have
authored the various entries, thus assuring their well recognized
excellent quality. Up to now 73 volumes have been issued, at a rate of
2 volumes per year, corresponding to a yearly output of 650 to 700
historiographic essays.
In recent months, however the allocation of future
entries has been interrupted creating among the scholars’ community the
alarming suspicion that such a move would lead to a closure of the
project or to its transformation into a different and less rigorous
editorial product
The world of culture, seriously concerned about such a
solution, appeals to the highest authorities in the hope that the work
be completed on the basis of the present plan, thus keeping its role as
one of the most prestigious products of the country, often defined by
experts in the field as the best national biography available.
